On the evening of Friday, November 2, 2001, the Dawntreader group was in attendance for the annual Fall Fireworks Festival of the Florida Pyrotechnic Arts Guild held on the W. O. Bullock farm at Monticello, Florida. Our gracious hosts and the FPAG allowed us to field test our most recent incarnation of THE GIANT STEEL FOUNTAIN. Four "quick-dried" (8days) pieces were burned, using different variations on the basic fuel formulation, inluding garnishments with specialty metals. Here you see piece number four from a distance of 30 feet about 2-3 seconds into core ignition sequence. This piece contained cast iron, stainless steel, chilled iron, ferrotitanium, and zinc dust, among other things.
Several seconds later, this same piece is building in savage intensity as spectators begin backing away from the fearsome display of light and sound. Branching sparks from the chilled iron particles may be seen along the periphery of the column and the ethereal green gaseous envelope surrounding the firestorm resulted from the incorporation of zinc dust into the fuel mix.
Near the peak of its awesome spendor, it was not possible to capture the entire flame column from the maximum available distance of 30 feet. The concensus of bystanders was an average overall height of 65-70 feet for this piece.
This picture is a composite of two frames so that the entire display may be at once.
